What is the CAN/ULC-S109 test standard? What is its scope of application?
CAN/ULC-S109 is a designated standard issued by Canada for testing flame-retardant fabrics, decorative materials, and films.
This standard applies to the flame performance testing of flame-retardant fabrics made from natural, synthetic, or a blend of natural and synthetic fibers, or plastic films used for tents, awnings, curtains, or decorative items.
Standard Name of the CAN/ULC-S109 Test:
CAN/ULC-S109: Flame tests of flame-resistant fabrics and films
CAN/ULC-S109: Flame Tests of Flame-Retardant Fabrics and Films
Test Methods for CAN/ULC-S109:
The CAN/ULC S109(R2019) test method includes small flame tests and large flame tests. Flame-retardant fabrics and films must meet the requirements of both small and large flame tests.
(1)Small Flame Test
The sample is placed in a metal holder.
A Bunsen burner is suspended below the lower end of each sample, supplying uniformly mixed natural gas or methane to the burner.
A flame is applied near the center of the lower end of the sample for 12 seconds. The duration of surface burning and the damage length are observed.
(2)Large Flame Test
The folded sample should be hung vertically, with the bottom positioned 100 mm above the center of the opening of a Bunsen burner with an inner diameter of 9.5 mm.
The burner supplies uniformly mixed natural gas or methane.
The flame is applied for 120 seconds, and the duration of surface burning and the damage length are observed.
